Checkers, also known as Draughts in many parts of the world, is a classic two-player strategy board game played on an 8x8 grid of alternating dark and light squares. It is one of the world's oldest games, with roots tracing back to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. Game Components

  • The Board: Players use only the 32 dark squares of the 64-square board.
  • The Pieces: Each player begins with 12 pieces (often referred to as "men"), typically colored red and black or white and black.

Objective The primary goal is to either capture all of the opponent's pieces or block them so they have no legal moves remaining. Standard Rules of Play

  1. Movement: Pieces move diagonally forward one square at a time onto unoccupied dark squares.
  2. Capturing: If an opponent's piece is in an adjacent diagonal square and the square immediately beyond it is empty, you must "jump" over it and remove it from the board.
  3. Forced Captures: In most official rules, if a capture is possible, the player is required to take it.
  4. Multiple Jumps: A single piece can make multiple jumps in one turn if it lands in a position to capture another piece immediately.
  5. Crowning (Kings): When a piece reaches the farthest row on the opponent's side (the "king's row"), it is promoted to a King.
  6. King's Abilities: Unlike regular pieces, Kings can move and capture both forward and backward diagonally.

Historical Background Early forms of the game, such as Alquerque, existed as far back as 1400 B.C.. The modern version played on a chessboard emerged in France around the 11th century. Today, checkers remains a popular competitive and recreational game worldwide, valued for its blend of simple rules and deep tactical complexity.
