The tiger (Panthera tigris) is the largest living cat species in the world and a member of the genus Panthera. Known for its powerful build and striking appearance, it is easily identified by its reddish-orange fur with a white underside and dark vertical black stripes.

  • Physical Characteristics:
    • Size: Adult male tigers can reach a total length of up to 3.2 meters (10.5 feet) and weigh nearly 295 kg (650 pounds), while females are generally smaller.
    • Strength: Roughly 60% to 70% of a tiger's body weight is pure muscle, allowing them to take down prey much larger than themselves, such as water buffalo or even young elephants.
    • Stripes: No two tigers have the same stripe pattern; these markings are unique to each individual, much like human fingerprints.
  • Habitat and Distribution:
    • Tigers are native to Asia and inhabit diverse environments ranging from the freezing Siberian taiga to the tropical mangrove swamps of the Sundarbans.
    • They require extensive territories that provide adequate cover (forests or tall grasslands), proximity to water, and a sufficient prey base.
  • Behavior and Social Structure:
    • Solitary Nature: Unlike lions, tigers are primarily solitary animals that live and hunt alone.
    • Territoriality: They are highly territorial, marking their home ranges with urine, scent markings, and scratch marks on trees to deter rivals.
    • Senses and Skills: They are expert swimmers and often soak in water to cool down on hot days. Their night vision is estimated to be six times better than that of humans, making them highly effective nocturnal hunters.
  • Diet and Hunting:
    • As apex predators, they are at the top of the food chain with no natural predators.
    • They are ambush predators that rely on stealth to stalk prey from behind before delivering a lethal bite to the neck. Their diet mainly consists of large ungulates like deer and wild boar.
  • Conservation Status:
    • Tigers are currently listed as an endangered species.
    • While global populations have seen a slight increase in recent years to approximately 3,890 individuals in the wild, they continue to face severe threats from habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.
