Australia is an amazing country and the smallest continent in the world. It is located in the Southern Hemisphere, which is why people often call it the "Land Down Under".

  • Geography and Cities: Australia is the only country that covers an entire continent. The capital city is Canberra, but the largest city is Sydney, famous for its Sydney Opera House. Much of the land is very dry and is called the "Outback".
  • Unique Animals: Many animals in Australia are found nowhere else on Earth. You can see kangaroos hopping in the wild, cute koalas sleeping in trees, and wombats that have cube-shaped droppings. It is also home to the platypus and the echidna, which are the only mammals that lay eggs.
  • Nature Wonders: Australia has the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef system, which is so big it can be seen from space. In the middle of the desert, there is a giant red rock called Uluru, which is sacred to the Aboriginal people.
  • Climate and Seasons: Because it is in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are the opposite of Europe or America. When it is winter in the north, it is summer in Australia, so people often celebrate Christmas at the beach.
  • People and Culture: The Aboriginal Australians have lived there for over 65,000 years, making theirs one of the oldest cultures in the world. People in Australia speak English, but they use fun slang words, like "barbie" for barbecue and "arvo" for afternoon.

Would you like to learn more about specific Australian animals or hear about the famous landmarks in Sydney?
