" Mowgli" is a series of stories within Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book that follows the life of a "man-cub" raised in the Indian jungle. Infancy and Adoption The story begins when a baby is separated from his parents during an attack by the tiger Shere Khan. The infant wanders into a wolf den, where he is protected by Mother Wolf (Raksha) and Father Wolf. Despite Shere Khan’s demands to claim the boy as prey, the Seeonee wolf pack, led by Akela, decides to adopt him. His life is spared thanks to the intervention of Baloo the bear and Bagheera the black panther, who speak on his behalf. He is named Mowgli, meaning "the frog". Life and Education in the Jungle Mowgli grows up as a member of the pack, learning the Law of the Jungle.

  • Mentors: Baloo teaches him the "Master Words" of the jungle to communicate with different species, while Bagheera teaches him how to hunt and survive.
  • The Bandar-log: As a young boy, Mowgli is kidnapped by the Bandar-log (monkey-people), who have no law. He is eventually rescued from the "Cold Lairs" (an abandoned city) by Baloo, Bagheera, and the rock python Kaa.

Conflict with Shere Khan As Mowgli reaches adolescence, Shere Khan influences the younger wolves to rebel against the aging leader Akela and reject Mowgli because he is human. Realizing he can no longer stay, Mowgli uses the "Red Flower" (fire) to drive away the tiger and the rebellious wolves, then leaves for the "Man-Village". Return to Humanity and the Final Battle In the village, Mowgli is adopted by a woman named Messua, who believes he is her long-lost son. He struggles to adapt to human life but finds work herding buffalo.

  • The Climax: Learning that Shere Khan is still hunting him, Mowgli orchestrates a trap. With the help of his wolf brothers, he causes a buffalo stampede that tramples Shere Khan to death in a ravine.
  • The Resolution: After being accused of sorcery by the villagers for his ability to talk to animals, Mowgli is cast out. He returns to the jungle with the tiger's hide, though he eventually realizes his ultimate destiny lies with humanity.
