Dear friend, for your latest letter. It was great to hear from you. You asked about my favorite national holiday in Russia, and I would love to tell you more about it.My absolute favorite holiday is New Year’s Eve, which is widely considered the most beloved celebration in Russia. Unlike in many Western countries where Christmas is the primary winter event, for us, New Year is the emotional and cultural peak of the season. Here is how we usually celebrate it:

  • Family Traditions: It is a family-oriented holiday where everyone gathers around a festive table. We decorate a "New Year tree" (similar to a Christmas tree) and wait for Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) and his granddaughter, Snegurochka, to bring gifts.
  • The Festive Feast: Our tables are always filled with traditional dishes like Olivier salad, tangerines, and champagne.
  • The Countdown: Just before midnight, we watch the President’s annual address on TV, followed by the chimes of the Kremlin Clock. When the clock strikes twelve, we make a wish and toast to the new year.
  • Winter Holidays: One of the best parts is that this celebration marks the start of a long winter vacation, often lasting until after the Russian Orthodox Christmas on January 7th.

There is a special atmosphere of magic and hope during this time that I think you would really enjoy. It’s the one time of year when everyone, regardless of age, truly believes in miracles.Tell me about your favorite holiday. What makes it special for you?Best wishes,[Your Name]Please let me know if you would like to see a similar letter about Victory Day or the traditional spring festival Maslenitsa.
